Thurso is the most Northerly town in mainland Britain, and is said by some to be named after the Norse god Thor, though it is more often attributed to the Norse for Bull's River - in any event the name is of Norse origin - Caithness was ruled by the Norse until 1266. The neighbouring port of Scrabster is the main port for the ferry to Orkney.
Also close by is Dunnet Head - the most northerly point on the mainland. Arriving & DepartingOpen Cycle Map Bing Map Sustrans Map (search Thurso, Highland)
Thurso is on National Cycle Route 1, other local cycle routes around here are on road, but this far North even the A9 isn't too busy. Thurso (THS) is the most Northerly rail station in the UK with level access to its one terminal platform, there are 4 trains a day (only one on Sundays) to and from Inverness. Live Train Times Ferries from Scrabster to Stromness - usually 3 a day (90 minute crossing). SleepingWaterside GH 3 Janet Street 01847 894751
Not the greatest stay of my trip (2010), but they did provide covered parking for the bike. The 1 star reviews on trip advisor are slightly harsh, but I'd find it difficult to award more than 2. Inchgarvie GH Olrig Street - stayed in 2001 (Google Street View picture of July 2008 shows no external signs of the property being a GH). Also stayed in Thurso in 1998 & 2003 - locations unknown.
