Gordon and MacPhail have played a very important role in the story of Single Malt whisky in Scotland. Founded in 1895, one of their first employees was John Urquhart, and 20 years later following the retirement of John MacPhail and the death of James Gordon he was the senior partner. The firm has remained in the Urguhart family ever since.
Early on they bottled single malts under license for a number of Speyside distilleries and over the years began to build up considerable stocks of their own casks of whisky from a wide range of distilleries as well. The Connoisseur's Choice range of single malts was launched in the '60s when single malt whisky was a rare sight. From the outset the shop was a grocer, and remains so today, but the whisky business has far outstripped the grocery. In 1993 they also became distillers, when they acquired Benromach Distillery. In 2010 they released the first 70yo single malt - a Mortlach - and have since made two releases from a 70yo cask of Glenlivet. They have their own warehouses - a large complex just to the North of the centre of Elgin. |
