Distilleries in England, Wales & Ireland Page Updated 02/01/2018
There are plenty of distilleries around the world outside Scotland, but they are generally beyond the remit of this site (at least for the time being). Within the British Isles the following Distilleries are producing or planning to produce Whisky
England
The English Whisky Company St George's Distillery, Norfolk. They have been distilling since December 2006 and after several years of producing various 'Chapters' have recently released 'The English' - both peated and non-peated single malts, and The Norfolk, Single Grain whiskies. 29/11/17
Cornish Whiskey (Hicks & Healey) bottled a single cask 7yo whisky in 2011, and still producing Cornish Whiskey though in fairly small quantities. Brewed at St Austell Brewery and then transferred to Healy's Cornish Cyder farm for distillation. They now sell an 8yo as well - which the website describes as blended, but the bottle calls single malt. 29/11/17
Adnams Southwold Distillery - Adnams have converted an old brewery into a distillery.They produce a variety of spirits at the distillery, including a 4yo single malt whisky, matured in French oak casks; and a recently introduced Rye Malt - 75% rye/25% barley. 29/11/17
Lakes Distillery - granted planning permission in September 2011 - the distillery and a visitor centre have now been completed and distillation commenced on 16/12/2014. The first single malt is due to be launched in 2018.
London Distillery Company (Battersea) have now begun distilling - the first whisky in London for 109 years.
Cotswolds Distillery - Stourton. Started distilling in 2014 - first whisky in October 2017.
Dartmoor (Bovey Tracey) - in the former Town Hall, a still that was previously used to distil cognac has been restored and installed. Whisky production began in February 2017. 29/11/17
The Copper Rivet Distillery (Chatham) Started distilling in 2016 and will release Masthouse Single Malt whisky in 2020.
East London Liquor Company Started distilling in 2015, have plans for a London Rye and other whiskies in various casks and finishes maturing from 2018.
Bimber Distillery, London (Park Royal) "We age our new-make spirit in four different cask types: ex-Bourbon, ex-Pedro Ximenez, ex-Port & virgin American oak. The first batches will become whisky in June 2019."
Cooper King Sutton-on-the-Forest, North Yorkshire, "We expect our first batch to be ready from 2020." The Blog on their website has alerted me to the distilleries listed below, of which I was previousy unaware.
Spirit of Yorkshire, Hunmanby, North Yorkshire. Now open to the public and distilling. They are offering bottles of "Maturing Malt" - spirit aged about 1.5 years. They also have a facebook page. 29/11/17
Chase, Preston Wynne, Herefordshire. Have been distilling vodka and gin since 2008, but have also been laying down some whisky - there may be a release in 2017. Nothing about whisky currently on their website. 29/11/17
Isle of Wight, Newport. "December 2015 the first Isle of Wight Whisky goes into Oak. We created a unique recipe using Island Barley brewed at Goddard’s Brewery, moved to the distillery and then distilled. The new barley spirit will be left maturing in oak casks for at least 3 years."
Durham Distillery, Currently located outside Durham City and producing gin, the distillery have announced a move to the "historic city centre of Durham" and that at the new site they will begin producing whisky. 02/01/18
Wales
Penderyn have been distilling Welsh Whisky since September 2000
Dà Mhìle Distillery, Ceredigion has bottled a 4yo organic Single Grain Welsh whisky, they are based in West Wales
Aber Falls, Abergwyngregyn - started distilling in 2017 - they hope to open a visitor centre in June 2018. 29/11/17
Ireland
Despite its history, and reputation Ireland has only a few distilleries at present, though those distilleries produce a considerable range of Irish Whiskey.
Cooley Distillery - previously owned by John Teeling, but sold to Jim Beam in early 2012, who have now been bought by Suntory.
Dingle Distillery - a new independent distillery, that commenced distillation in late 2012.
New Midleton Distillery - in Cork, owned by Pernod Ricard
Old Bushmills Distillery - in County Antrim, owned by Diageo until 2014, but now sold to Jose Cuervo.
Teeling DIstillery - in Dublin opened in May 2015, owned by Jack Teeling.
Tullamore - new distillery built by William Grant & Sons, opened in 2014, owners of the Tullamore Dew brand, which was originally distilled in Tullamore.
There are plans for many more distilleries including - Belfast Distillery Company are building a distillery in the old Crumlin Jail; Slane Castle Irish Whiskey have also announced plans for a distillery in the castle grounds to start operation in 2016.
