Vital Stats
Balmenach operated as an illicit still before the licensing system was introduced in 1824.
The first distillery along the A95 - the main route into Speyside from the middle of Scotland, and the first along the Strathspey Railway - the main route in its day. The railway was important to the distillery and featured its longest private siding. The Barclay 'pug' locomotive 'Balmenach' which worked the line is now preserved at Boat of Garten on the Strathspey Railway All the distillery's output is matured on site. Balmenach's current owners (since 1997) have yet to produce an official bottling of their own distillation - of whisky that is, however, Balmenach distillery also produces Caorunn gin!! Two very limited editions of older whisky 27 and 28yo have been released this century at 46%.
Had a Flora and Fauna bottling when owned by Diageo - very rare now. A few independent bottlings are available. The Deerstalker label has been associated with Balmenach, and currently the 12yo Deerstalker is Balmenach. Otherwise, SMWS is the most likely source of Balmenach whisky. A large proportion of the production is sold to other distillers for their blends, but the spirit is a key component of Inver House's own Hankey Bannister.
