Carradale developed as a fishing port, and though the fishing industry has declined, there are still a number of boats based in Carradale fishing for shellfish rather than herring these days. In its heyday, Carradale was a stopping point for regular steamers from Glasgow to Campbeltown. For more see the history page on the Carradale Harbour site. The Dunvalanree's website has a page dedicated to its malts.

Carradale is roughly half-way down the Kintyre peninsula - the only community off the road along the east side, at the narrowest point of the Kilbrannan Sound. It is the largest settlement on the East coast of the Kintyre peninsula between Tarbert and Campbeltown.
Carradale stretches from the bridge over Carradale Water on the main road, where there is a Post Office, Police Station and Fire Station; via the road junction (B842/B879) by the Glen Bar and Restaurant, with various clusters of houses along the B879 road towards the village and harbour - about 1.5 miles from the road junction. Port Righ is about half a mile off the B879 before you get to the main part of the village. Carradale Bay - a wide sandy bay is to the South of Port Righ and the other side of Carradale Point. It can be reached by bike from the Port Righ road, but the main access is via th road to Caradale House, Self-Catering Cottages and Caravan Park - or by submerged stepping stones across the Caradale Water from Waterfoot! The rest of the coast is sparsely populated. Peninver has a caravan park and a pub; Saddell has a Castle and the remains of an abbey; there is also a Castle at Torrisdale (with self-catering accommodation). North of Carradale, Grogport has a Bronze age burial chamber; Cloanaig is little more than a ferry slipway; and Skipness is the end of the road but has a shop, cafe, ruined castle and ruined chapel - there is a footpath (part of the Kintyre Way) to Tarbert, which otherwise can only be reached by crossing the Kintyre peninsula on the B8001 and rejoining the A83. Stayed at the Ashbank on the way back from Campbeltown in 2003, with a damaged rear carrier - the bike shop in Campbeltown had been unable to supply a replacement. The then proprietor of the hotel took considerable trouble finding a way to fix it - so effectively that it lasted several months longer!
