The River Deveron rises in the hills above Cabrach and flows down through Haugh of Glass, and shortly thereafter accompanies the A920 into Huntly, where one of its main tributaries the Bogie joins it. From there the Aberdeen - Inverness railway follows its course until its confluence with its other major tributary, the River Isla near Milton of Rothiemay. Here the river at last has some distilleries a few miles from its course (Glendronach and Knockdhu). At Turiff the course turns sharply North and the Deveron heads for the sea between the twin towns of Banff and Macduff - each of which once had a distillery, sadly Banff's is no more, but the Macduff Distillery, better known as Glen Deveron, the name under which the whisky is officially bottled, is still producing the water of life.
The Bogie's sole contribution to Whisky is currently Ardmore at Kennethmont, near Rhynie, (there are some plans for a Huntly distillery), but the Isla has Speyside's oldest distillery (Strathisla) named after it. The Isla is not a lengthy river, rising near Drummuir, only a couple of miles from Dufftown, flowing down to Keith - a course followed by the Keith - Dufftown railway. Strathmill and Glen Keith are the other distilleries in Keith, and shortly afterwards is joined by Mulben Water (Glentauchers and Aultmore - the latter situated on a stream that joins the Mulben shortly before Keith).
