Wikipedia Internet Guide to Scotland RSBP Loch Gruinart Islay Info: Atlantic Coast Bruichladdich Loch Gorm Kilnave Chapel and Cross Undiscovered Scotland: Kilchoman Crosses Kilnave Chapel Loch Gruinart Bruichladdich started off as a distillery village but has expanded a little and now has a substantial pier, which gives good views of Loch Indaal, the Rhinns and the Paps of Jura, and oil terminal. Bruichladdich is the main settlement in NW Islay, though the historical evidence of more human occupation remains, and Kilnave was the site of the last major clan battle on Islay - the battle of Traigh Ghruineard in 1598.Earlier remains of Iron Age forts can also be found in the area, including Dun Chroisprig beyond Machir Bay, and Dun nan Nighean & Dun Bheolain, north of Saligo. A number of lochs in the area have artificial islands, crannogs, and Loch Gorm, the largest freshwater loch on Islay has the ruins of Loch Gorm Castle on what appears to be a natural island. Bruichladdich, Gruinart, Kilchoman & WhiskyBruichladdich and Kilchoman Distilleries are the whisky attractions of the area.
Debbie's Mini Market also sells a range of Malt Whisky |
Bruichladdich is just two miles north of Port Charlotte and is a little bit more than the other Distillery villages on Islay; Kilchoman a cluster of cottages around a derelict Church - the Distillery being on a nearby farm; Gruinart a few scattered houses and a Loch that's home to thousands of Barnacle Geese in the winter. There's plenty of other wildlife around the Loch after the geese have returned to Greenland - Islay Info RSBP
