Vital Stats
A product of the 1890s whisky boom - and a victim of the Pattison bust (the Pattisons owned the distillery when they were declared bankrupt) and it closed for 5 years. Aultmore has been owned by John Dewars twice - from 1923 until 1925 when they sold the distillery to DCL a Diageo predecessor - who sold it back to Dewars, by then a subsidiary of Bacardi in 1998. Diageo had rebuilt and expanded the distillery during their ownership - in 1970.
Aultmore was powered by a steam engine for 70 years - it is on display on the distillery site. The short-lived Keith to Buckie railway (1884-1915) passed through the site of the distillery. The railway remained open for freight as far as Aultmore until 1966 - the rebuild of the distillery has extended over the former trackbed.
