Ardrossan is regarded as one of the three towns - Saltcoats and Stevenston being the other two - that form a conurbation along the A738. Ardrossan's harbour was completed in 1864, and it soon replaced the smaller, older harbour at Saltcoats, now disused. Two competing railways were built from Glasgow to Ardrossan to use the port for the export of coal from the Lanarkshire coalfield. The Lanarkshire and Ayrshire line terminated on the north of the harbour, but as it paralleled the other railway was closed in the 1960s. The OS 1926 map shows the plethora of stations in the area. Other maps on the National Library of Scotland site show how the town was completely dominated by railways. The extant railway and the branch to Largs combine with Castle Hill to make a kilometre long barrier from the High Road to the Town Station, with just a stepped footbridge from the hill across the railway. Ardrossan is on National Cycle Route 73 which leads through the three towns to Ardrossan Harbour, and then hops on the ferry to Arran. A cycle track leads north most of the way to West Kilbride, mainly alongside the A78. Only a small part of the closed railway has been turned into a cycle path, mostly in Saltcoats. Stations: Ardrossan Harbour (ADS), Ardrossan Town (ADN) and Ardrossan South Beach (ASB). Live Train Times: ADS, ADN, ASB. Ardrossan Town has a few more trains than Harbour, and South Beach about twice as many as it is also served by trains to Largs. All stations have direct trains to Glasgow Central. Live train times. Each of the stations has a single platform with level access. The main CalMac ferry route to Arran leaves from Ardrossan (timetable Winter Summer). In the Summer a three times a week ferry service operates to Campbeltown. SleepingCrescent Park House* 17 North Crescent Road 01294 464900

Small restaurant, very friendly staff - my go to venue when I'm in Ardrossan Cecchinni's The Harbour 01294 471700 Enormous restaurant, eat there once, main course OK, but starter of fish cakes didn't appear to have been near a fish for long. Also unimpressed by the service of drinks (see below). Lauriston Hotel 15 South Crescent Road 01294 463771 DrinkingGarfield's Tapas Bar 59 Princes Street 01294 463155
Small range of malts Cecchinni's The Harbour 01294 471700 A few malts, but I was served one with a non-requested lump of ice on my sole visit - it returned without the ice, but still cold. One of the reasons I've not been back. CyclingNorth Ayrshire Cycles 47 Hamilton St Saltcoats 01294 463421
