Vital Stats
Loch Lomond is the most versatile distillery in Scotland. It is also a maverick distillery and was not a member of the Scotch Whisky Association prior to the most recent change of ownership.
It uses modified Lomond stills which have a straight neck with distillation trays in the necks giving more contact with the cooling vapour, but otherwise the stills are like pot stills. This enables distillation up to 90% - 20% higher than a traditional pot still. More details and pictures on the distillery website A pair of these stills were used in the distillery when it opened, but it fell silent in 1984. Re-opened in 1987 by Alexander Bulloch and Glen Catrine, a further pair of stills was added, and then two traditional pot stills in 1999. A Coffey still had been added in 1994 to produce grain spirirt, so they can (and do) produce their own single blend. They also use three different peating levels, and different strains of yeast, so are able to produce a wide variety of malt spirit by mixing the different outputs - they have also often used mated barley in the Coffey still. A total of 8 different malts - Loch Lomond, Craiglodge, Croftengea, Glen Douglas, Inchfad, Inchmoan, Inchmurrin and Old Rhosdhu - were made and occasionally marketed. Most of these names are now only used internally. The original Lomond still was designed before the building of Loch Lomond distillery and was first used at the nearby (but now closed) Inverleven distillery. The distillery is also unusual in having its own on-site cooperage. Loch Lomond lies on the Highland/Lowland divide, but is regarded as a Highland distillery. Historical Range Note
Loch Lomond's old website listed 3 LL bottlings - NAS (the only one generally available), Peated and 18yo. Additionally the Single Blend was listed together with a number of single cask Glen Douglas, Inchfad and Inchmurrin. There are also bottles of 1966 LL in presentation glass-lined copper stills at around £400 each!
The website has been totally redesigned since the 2013 change in ownership and now only the NAS is shown.
An Inchmurrin range was released in 2013 (12, 15,18, 21yo), bottled at 46% non-chillfiltered.
However, TWE now list a Peated, 18yo and an Organic LL.
