For each place, I've included some brief details, some historical, geographical, other trivia; details of getting there by bike or train (where appropriate) with links to cycle route sites and station plans and timetables. For islands and connecting ports, ferry details are also shown. In the Sleeping, Eating, Drinking sections, prominence is given to places I've been to. Links to Undiscovered Scotland or town/area sites are usually included. For the smaller islands/towns I have tried to list all catered accommodation, bars and places to eat out - but please check they are still open before relying on them!
Booking.com, Late Rooms, Trivago etc are useful for finding accommodation, but they don't list everything, and whilst free to the user, they charge the accommodation a booking fee - one fo the reasons some establishments don't use them.
Links are also given to local council/community etc sites that provide much more info on the local area.
Sometimes I've included links to Visit Scotland. Visit Scotland is the official tourist site and is packed with info, but does not have as comprehensive a listing of accommodation as it once did, due to increasing charges for inclusion and commission for bookings etc, many smaller establishments have opted out, so local town/area sites can be better. Links to Tourist Information Centres are to the regional Visit Scotland site. Other sites sometimes linked to include The Internet Guide to Scotland and Explore Scotland.
A section on the area's links to Whisky gives details of any local Whisky shops, distilleries or other notable whisky connections. Details are also included of the nearest cycle shops. Illustrations are (unless otherwise stated) from my trips to the location - at the bottom of each page a link to my flickr site where larger versions of the photos can be found together with other photos from the area.
Shopping - links to Asda, Co-Op, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco where they have a local store - if nothing local, the nearest store may be shown in brackets - without a link. Waitrose added near Glasgow and Edinburgh. (Links from this page are to each stores' location finder page). Other notable local shops may be listed. Banking link is to Google search page for the place and banking (or nearestcashpoint.co.uk) - in smaller places Banks/ATMs are listed. In more rural areas Post Offices may also be listed. Links to other sites are included wherever possible, and are shown in white. Underlined links are to other pages on this site; a single @ is of course a link to the email address.
