Perth & WhiskyPerth no longer has any distilleries - Strathearn is the nearest, but in the past there were 11 in the area, including one in Perth itself - in St John Street from 1821 to 1825. Stronachie, near Bridge of Earn, operated from 1890 until closed by Diageo predecessor DCL in 1928, but the name has been revived by AD Rattray, who have bottled a Stronachie for the past 10 years or so - though the Malt is actually from Benrinnes.
Excell Wines in St John Street carries a good selection of whiskies, and has organised whisky festivals in Perth. |
Perth is the Gateway to the Highlands and also known as The Fair City (Sir Walter Scott's fault). Before the Forth and Tay Rail bridges were built you had to travel through Perth, for road users this was true for much longer.
Arriving & DepartingMaps: Open Cycle Bing
Perth (PTH) - Live Train Times: PTH Access by ramps from passageway between platforms, and main footbridge has ramps as well as steps. Also note access via car park 2 to platforms 4 to 7 from Glasgow Road (A93) - very useful for access to the north and west of the city. There is now a bridge at the Southern end of the platforms with lift access (curious design when accessed from Platform 2, as there is a step down to the lift, which can be avoided with a small detour, but seems like bad planning). Perth is on Cycle Route 77, part of which is the route through North Inch. There are also other cycle routes to the north of the city, including the Lade Walk, which can be accessed from the Station car park (see above) by the judicious use of Morrisons and other retail park car parks.
